The Breakthroughs Lab for Applications of Science and Technologies, often called BLAST for short, is a multi-disciplinary laboratory at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) based in southern Sweden. The lab is focused on pushing the frontiers of knowledge in breakthrough technologies and foresight engineering. Our mission is to accelerate the translation and transfer of world-class research into world-leading innovations.

The Breakthroughs Lab is essential in challenging current technical understanding and providing more pathways to new frontiers in science and engineering. By involving new ideas, discoveries, and/or tools, this type of research radically changes our understanding of an important existing concept and helps spark a paradigm shift or entirely new field.

A note on the lab name
Our focus is on breakthroughs. The word blast conveys a sense of energy and innovation, perfect for a lab focused on breakthrough tech. Blast is also an apt word denoting an embryonic activity because blastocyst is a biological term for an early-stage cell of mammals. Plus, we are having a blast here – come join us!
